How I rekindled my joy for movement

My mother LOVES to dance. When I was a little girl she would pull me into the living room and we would dance to everything from Calypso to Rock’n’Roll to Disco. It was silly, fun and I loved every minute of it!

When I moved out on my own, the party continued as my friends and I hit the clubs, raves, jams and drum circles living our best lives shaking our booties on whatever dance floor we could find… ahh the glory days! But those times passed, my career became a priority and I found myself spending more time at my computer and less time dancing.

By the time I reached my 40’s I was overweight, my joints hurt and I had stopped dancing. My movement was reduced to a weekly yoga class and I regularly bitched about my age and those extra 10, 20, or 30 pounds. Sound familiar?

Lucky for me, a friend introduced me to Pilates to help reduce my knee pain and I fell in love with the combination of breathwork, flow and precision. Within a few months my knees had strengthened and there was less pain. Hmmm maybe it was not age at all just my fitness level.

Today I am grateful to say that my workouts have become a form of self-care, and I MAKE time to dance, play and create. Mom is 74 now and still dancing. She practices Pilates twice a week along with her weekly Tai Chi and Aquacize classes. I hope I’m still grooving when I get to her age!
